Sheffield was hit with ‘Salsa Fever’
recently, as people donned their dancing shoes and glad rags for The People’s
Movement ‘Viva Salsa’ event at Cubana Bar and Restaurant.
The evening, which forms part of Sheffield Hallam University’s
Love2B festival during Valentine’s week, began with a free one-hour
salsa dance lesson with a dance tutor Nicoli.
After the lesson there was a chance to try out your new moves, or show
off your existing ones, to the sounds of Latino music in the surroundings
of the Cuban-themed venue.
Throughout the night, Nicoli gave out physical activity facts over the
PA, telling the crowd that whilst they were having fun and dancing, they
were also burning calories and helping to strengthen their heart, lungs
and circulatory system.
The Viva Salsa event was run by Sheffield’s physical activity revolution,
The People’s Movement, which has been launched to encourage us all
to lead a more active lifestyle.
The People’s Movement is promoted by Active Sheffield, a partnership
consisting of Sheffield City Council, and Sheffield First for Health and
Well-being.
The campaign aims to show that being physically active is not just about
joining a gym - an activity such as salsa dancing may be something people
have always thought about doing, and just not got round to, or maybe never
even considered before.
Paul Billington of Active Sheffield said: “Viva Salsa was a great
success. Dancing is a great a way to keep physically active and we are
thrilled that so many people turned up to have a good time, and get active
on the dancefloor.
“Being more physically active doesn’t just mean taking exercise,
it can mean taking up a new hobby, a chance to meet new people, and the
opportunity to enjoy a new and exciting activity - such as salsa dancing.” |
