Twisting Time Is Here For Yorkshire's Record Attempt

It’s time to round up the family and get ready to boogie, as the People’s Movement, Sheffield’s physical activity campaign, is encouraging people in the city to come along to Mayfest and break a Yorkshire dance record.

Television and Radio personality Toby Foster will kick-off the ‘People’s Movement Twist,’ an attempt to get the most people ever in Yorkshire dancing to Chubby Checker’s 60’s hit song, ‘The Twist’.

The People’s Movement want Sheffield to smash the current Yorkshire record, which stands at 1691, and was set by students and staff at schools in York in 2004.

The record attempt will take place in the Radio Sheffield Arena at 12.30am during both days of Mayfest on Sunday 28th, and Monday 29th May, and city mascots including Theo the Bear and Steeler Dan, will be on hand to get everyone in the party mood.

Paul Billington, spokesperson for The People’s Movement, said: “Mayfest is a great chance for thousands of people in the city to get out in the open and have fun with the whole family.  If we can beat this record, Sheffield can rightly claim to be the ‘dance capital’ of Yorkshire.  We hope that by setting this record-breaking challenge, we can show people that being physically active is not just for those serious about sport or going to the gym.  Fun activities, such as dancing, can not only help to keep you healthy, but they are great fun too!

“We aim to make Sheffield the most active city in the UK, and help to reduce levels of obesity and diabetes across the city.  Our website, www.thepeoplesmovement.co.uk, has plenty of simple activity ideas that anyone can slot into a busy lifestyle, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, or getting off the bus a few stops early, as well as a comprehensive list of dance schools and classes if people want to strut their stuff after the record attempt.”

Mayfest, which has been running for the past five years at Hillsborough Park, is the largest open-air event in Sheffield.  Over 40,000 thousand people turned out for the two-day event last year, and Mayfest 2006 promises to the biggest and best yet.

Mayfest runs from 11.00am – 6.30pm on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th May 2006 at Hillsborough Park.  Admission for adults is £5, children under 14 get in for £2, and under 3's are free. Tickets are also available on the day.  For more information, please call 0114 273 6433.
